about

message from Ian Byrne:
I grew up in the small village of Avoca Co. Wicklow Ireland.
The closest town was Arklow, where I attended secondary school.
The song “Old Man Dan” was inspired by my memories of an old gypsy from Arklow town who really had nothing to his name. He acquired his clothes and his food from dustbins and dumpsters. As grim as that may sound, he was always smiling and would always greet everybody with cheer. On one of my trips home I asked, where did he go? and nobody seemed to know! He had nothing but he had everything! The song is called “Old Man Dan”.

lyrics

Where did he go
Where did he go
Far far away
Far far away
Where did he go
Where did he go
Far far away
Far far away

Old mad Dan with a fiddle in his hand
Happy little man and he singing in a band
Drink a little whiskey and a dance a little jig
Chasin all the girls and he chewing on a cig
Lookin for a bedin the woods with a hood
Looking for some soggy spuds and heating with the wood
Dancing in the rain and dancing in the streets
All the little people and their tapping with their feet

Chorus

Where does the man live nobody knows
He drinks a lot of whiskey has a massive runny nose
Same shoes same shirt a coat on his back
Baggy trousers with the braces with a feather in his cap
Always smiling when he’s playing with the dog
Always sings when he’s dancing on a log
Old mad Dan with a fiddle in his hand
Play the music and the jigging he’s the legend of the land
